This was a fun read. If you enjoy the martial arts, I recommend this. The writing is good, the grammar is clean, and you're not wading through typos and gross misuse of words. There was 1 or 2 spots where a word was used incorrectly, but nothing obvious or excessive.I would not call this a serious book. If you're looking for a fun book to read at the beach, or on a car ride, this fits the bill. Younger readers will probably enjoy this as well.
The main negative is the age of the main characters. It's a bit of a stretch to see the main characters as middle schoolers. They act more like high schoolers, and their acomplishments seem far fetched for their age.
The biggest character in the book, Katana, also seems to accomplish anything she sets her mind to. Her grades come easily for her, and she's essentially a martial arts prodigy. The main saving grace here is that she does have to work at the martial arts, and while skills certainly come to her more quickly and easily than to most people it still takes some time. This is also helped by the fact that, even as a prodigy, the adults who have spent years mastering their skills are still clearly better than her.
With that said, the overall tone of the book is light and fun, so overlooking these negatives was ultimately fairly easy for me. If you enjoy kung fu movies involving unbelievable skills (not quite on the level of "Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon"), you will probably enjoy this book as well.
Bottom line: I would certainly recommend the book.

Katana Shodan The Scroll of the Five Masters An Epic YA Fantasy Series Book 1 eBook Ken Warner Reviews
Definitely a fun read. The plot seemed very familiar to me and I couldn't put my finger on it till about a quarter of the way through. Then I realized it's pretty much the same basic plot as Harry Potter. But with eastern martial arts magic vs western wizard magic.
This book was very well written and flowed well from one scene to the next. However i didn't enjoy it as much i thought i would. I think if i had any knowledge of karate i might have enjoyed it more.I also believe i might have enjoyed it more if i was younger i believe i was too old for this Harry Potter like teen against the villian story
I loved the attention to detail and the accuracy of the information and distinction between the martial arts, both Chinese and Japanese. That alone would have made this worth the read. I just wish there would have more of the plot line, action, danger revealed in the earlier sections along with Katana's training to keep the story moving faster in the beginning. That said I loved the story and look forward to reading the next installment.
WOW! What do you get with a little Harry Potter and mix in a little Veronica Roth? Ken Warner's The Scroll of the Five Masters! I received an advance reader’s copy of the fourth book in the series (Katana Yodan The Immortal Masters) and decided to read book 1 first. Outstanding read! Although it's a bit of a stretch to see the main characters as middle-schoolers. I look forward to the second book when discretionary income allows the purchase. Meanwhile on to book 4
Katana is a young girl being raised by her aunt. She studies martial arts with her friend Chris.
She finds out she is quite gifted and able to do what is called a chen do (think Bruce Lee type things!) So she is sent to a special school for gifted blackbelts.
There we find out that evil Samurai warriors are after something in the school. Then the book really takes off!!
Along the way Katana makes New friends, is rejoined with an old friend, has battles and learns some news about the parents she never knew.
I highly recommend this book if you like martial arts!
I received this book free in order to offer an unbiased review.
Here goes Kata was a fast paced read. I do not usually read young adult books but I made an exception after reading the blurb about the book. I really liked this book. The author did a lot of research about the different types of martial arts. I learned new things as well as l loved the action and mystery. To be able to 'fade' would be scary as well as really cool! I look forward to reading more adventures about this young girl and what obstacles she will face.
I was surprised to find out that this book was for teen readers! I really enjoyed this because it reads well for adults too! What caught my attention to this book (& series) is the Martial Arts theme & fantasy put together. I could see this book turned into a movie with Bruce Lee & other famous Martial Artists. Actually, Martial Arts is the backdrop of the series, is not too technical for those not familiar with Martial Arts & pretty much self explanatory. It is much more about the different characters (heros & villians) as well as their journey foward. (I had to lookup some of the villians names & was surprised, who or what they are.) I can't wait to read the second book of the series!
